Claudio Descalzi

Attuale Amministratore Delegato di Eni, Claudio Descalzi, nato a Milano nel 1955, avvia il suo percorso professionale nel 1979, dopo la laurea in Fisica presso l’Università degli Studi di Milano. Due anni più tardi entra in Eni: è l'inizio di un importante percorso professionale all'interno del Gruppo, che lo porterà a ricoprire incarichi di crescente prestigio e responsabilità. Inizialmente ingegnere di giacimento, diventa presto Project Manager e si occupa dello sviluppo delle attività della Società nel Mare del Nord, in Libia, in Nigeria e in Congo. Nel 1990, in qualità di Responsabile delle attività operative e di giacimento in Italia, il manager sviluppa un nuovo modello che consente al Paese di raggiungere i 250.000 barili al giorno, incrementando notevolmente la produzione. Quattro anni più tardi, Claudio Descalzi intraprende una significativa esperienza professionale all'estero: prima in Congo, dove viene nominato Managing Director di Eni Congo SA, e, dal 1998, in Nigeria. Qui riveste la carica di Vice Chairman & Managing Director della Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), consociata di Eni, avviando diversi progetti deep-water nell'offshore nigeriano, tra i quali l'esportazione del gas prodotto dall'impianto di liquefazione di NLNG. Le competenze acquisite in questi anni lo portano, tra il 2000 e il 2001, ad assumere la responsabilità dell'area geografica Africa, Medio Oriente e Cina. Fra i risultati raggiunti il lancio del Progetto Western Libyan Gas, il primo a valorizzare il gas naturale libico attraverso l'esportazione e la vendita in Italia. Dal 2002 al 2005 è Direttore dell'area geografica Italia, Africa e Medio Oriente e, contemporaneamente, entra a far parte del Consiglio di Amministrazione di diverse consociate Eni. Tra il 2005 e il 2014 opera nella Divisione Exploration & Production della multinazionale, inizialmente come Vice Direttore Generale, poi dal 2008 in qualità di Chief Operating Officer, contribuendo alla definizione delle strategie e allo sviluppo delle attività per il raggiungimento di nuovi obiettivi operativi ed economici in Italia e all'estero. Dal 2010 al 2014 Claudio Descalzi è Presidente di Eni UK e nel maggio 2014 diventa Amministratore Delegato del Gruppo, ruolo che ricopre ancora oggi. Dal luglio 2018 a gennaio 2020 è membro del Board of Trustees di mothers2mothersUK.

Oltre all'impegno in Eni, Descalzi è Componente del Consiglio Generale di Confindustria e Consigliere di Amministrazione della Fondazione Teatro alla Scala. Visiting Fellow of The University of Oxford, Claudio Descalzi è inoltre il primo europeo ad aver ricevuto il prestigioso premio internazionale SPE/AIME "Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal 2012" dalla Society of Petroleum Engineers e dall'American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) nel settore dell'Oil & Gas. Nel giugno 2025 è stato nominato Cavaliere del Lavoro dal Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella.

Born in Milan in 1955, Claudio Descalzi is the current Chief Executive Officer of Eni. His professional journey began in 1979, shortly after he earned a Degree in Physics from the University of Milan. Two years later, he joined Eni, embarking on a distinguished career path within the Group that saw him take on roles of increasing significance and responsibility. Initially serving as a Reservoir Engineer, he soon became a Project Manager, overseeing the development of Eni’s operations in regions such as the North Sea, Libya, Nigeria, and the Congo.

In 1990, as Head of Reservoir and Operating Activities in Italy, Claudio Descalzi designed a new model that enabled the country to reach a daily output of 250,000 barrels, significantly boosting production. Four years later, he began a series of major international assignments, starting in the Congo, where he was appointed Managing Director of Eni Congo SA. By 1998, he moved to Nigeria to serve as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), an Eni subsidiary. In Nigeria, he launched several deep-water offshore projects, including the export of gas produced by the NLNG liquefaction plant.

His growing expertise led him to take charge of the Africa, Middle East, and China regions between 2000 and 2001, serving as Eni’s Area Manager. Among his key achievements was the launch of the Western Libyan Gas Project, the first initiative to monetize Libyan natural gas through its export and sale to Italy. From 2002 to 2005, he served as Director for Italy, Africa, and the Middle East, while simultaneously sitting on the Board of Directors of several Eni subsidiaries.

Between 2005 and 2014, his career continued within Eni’s Exploration & Production Division, first as Deputy General Manager and then, from 2008, as Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he contributed to the definition of strategies and the development of activities to meet new operational and economic targets both in Italy and abroad. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Chairman of Eni UK, before becoming the Group’s Chief Executive Officer in May 2014, a position he currently holds. From July 2018 to January 2020, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees of mothers2mothers UK.

Beyond his responsibilities at Eni, Claudio Descalzi is a member of the General Council of Confindustria and a member of the Board of Directors of the Teatro alla Scala Foundation. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford.

In 2012, he became the first European in the oil and gas sector to receive the “Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal”, awarded by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). In June 2025, he was appointed a Knight of Labour by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
