Luigi Ferraris, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Terna SpA since April 2017, has been pursuing an impressive professional career by holding top executive positions at major Italian and international companies. He was born in 1962 and earned a degree in Business and Economics at the University of Genoa. He started his professional career in Price Waterhouse's audit department in 1988. He then held various managerial positions at an international level at Agusta, Piaggio VE, and Sasib Beverage until 1996, when he joined Elsag Bailey Process Automation - a Finmeccanica Group company - as Area Controller for Europe. Two years later, he was appointed CFO of Elsacom, another company of the Finmeccanica Group operating in the satellite telecommunication segment. In 1999 he joined the Enel Group - one of the largest multinational companies operating in the energy sector - where he held various key financial, management and executive roles within the Group's holding company and subsidiaries, including Enel Servizi, until 2015. Specifically, he was appointed Sole Director of Enel Servizi in December 2004 and served as delegated Chairman of the subsidiary from 2006 to 2014. In 2004, he was also appointed Head of Planning and Control of the Enel Group and in the following year, he became Head of Planning, Control and Administration Services. As Chief Financial Officer from 2009 to 2014, Luigi Ferraris was responsible for all extraordinary finance and M&A operations, including an 8 billion capital increase in 2009, the integration of the Spanish, Slovak and Russian companies acquired during the years by the multinational, and the listing of Enel Green Power SpA, of which he was appointed Chairman in 2009. His expertise also earned him a place on the Board of Directors of Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA, Endesa SA, Enel Distribuzione SpA, Enel Produzione SpA, and Enel Investment Holding BV, as well as in other major organizations at an international level. He served as delegated Chairman of Enel Factor SpA from 2009 to 2014 and was then appointed as member of the Board of Directors, and later as CEO, of the Chilean subsidiary Enersis SA, which manages the Group's investments in Latin America. In February 2015, Luigi Ferraris was appointed as CFO of the Poste Italiane Group, where he successfully supervised the listing of the company's shares on the Italian Stock Exchange, completed in October 2015. From May 2017 to May 2020, he served as CEO and General Manager of Terna S.p.A., leading the Company though an important renewal process and investing with conviction in the sustainability, safety and efficiency of the transmission grid and contributing to the affirmation of the Company among the key players in the energy transition process.
On 3 June 2021 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.
Luigi Ferraris has been engaged in teaching and research activities for several years: he is lecturer in Corporate Strategy at the Economics Department of the "Luiss Guido Carli" University in Rome, where he was previously in charge of coordinating the courses on Business Strategy, Planning and Control, Management Control Systems, and Energy Management of the MBA program. He was an independent member of the Board of Directors of Erg SpA, a listed company mainly operating in the renewables sector.
